THROW OFF WHAT HINDERS YOU

TEXT: Eph. 4:30-32

·        Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of

malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ

God forgave you.                                   Eph 4:31-32 (NIV)

1)      THINGS THAT HINDER US (EXTERNAL)

·        The words “throw off” come from one word that means to “set aside”.

·        The word “hindrances” literally means “a mass or a weight that causes something to bend”.  In other words, it refers to a weight or burden.

·        Some common weights that wear us down include:

a.      Words - _______________________________________________________________

b.      Actions - ______________________________________________________________

c.       Accidents - ____________________________________________________________

2)      THINGS THAT ENTANGLE US (INTERNAL)

·        The word “entangles” literally means “standing all around”.  So, the idea is something we can’t get away from.

·        Some common sins that entangles us include:

a.      Destructive thought patterns - _____________________________________________

b.      Prejudicial attitudes - ____________________________________________________

c.       Historical Compulsions - _________________________________________________

3)      THROWING THOSE THINGS OFF

·         “Listen, I’m against sin.  I’ll kick it as long as I’ve got a foot.  I’ll fight it as long as I’ve

got a fist.  I’ll butt it as long as I’ve got a head.  And I’ll bite it as long as I’ve got a tooth,

and when I’m old, fistless, footless and toothless, I’ll gum it ‘till I go home to glory and it

goes home to perdition.” – Billy Sunday, Evangelist of the early 1900’s

CONCLUSION

·        To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are

really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."

                                       John 8:31-32 (NIV)
